I descended to the world beneath this world. With nothing earthly to beckon it northward, my compass spun and spun. Phantasms radiated into my periphery, took up residence in my simmering shadow. Everywhere the fog. I called for my friend. I listened for the voice of my friend. Hell was here with me. I turned left, I turned right, and hell was at my heels. I was no longer a self; I was only the galloping of instinct; I was a fear older than time.
I ascended my fear. I crested the height of my fear, and spilled out of the fog, and drifted in silence down a river under stars. Some benevolence trotted amiably beside me, though I could…

Hedgehog in the Fog can be plainly described as beauty in animation, serenity in sound and a simple childlike story of friendship and imaginative adventure. This Russian animated short was a splendor to watch, a full blown experience for the senses.
It is not overtly metaphorically or deep in meaning. Just as the synopsis states the story is just a hedgehog lost in a fog dense forest on his way to spend the evening with his friend. During the journey, our titular hedgehog fearfully conquers his imagination and fantasies that he envisions lurking in the fog. It is simplicity refined with gorgeous visuals and unique animation style. The sound applications used in specific scenes were as effective as anyone could have hoped they would be; utilizing more suspenseful music/sound effects within the fog and a dreamy meditative score throughout the rest of the film. Hedgehog in the Fog is a great way to spend ten minutes.

A substantial amount of awe is brought by this enduring and enthralling Soviet animated masterpiece. What seems to begin as a mysterious fairy tale is suddenly transformed into a macabre adventure into the uncertain unknown. The hedgehog is just a poor little creature wandering through thick clouds of mist with a purpose in its head, yet embarking in an unforgettable and nightmarish adventure that only Norshteyn could show as a fascinating spectacle.

The Good: It's hailed by critics as one of the greatest animated films ever made, but somehow, this masterpiece remains an obscure and forgotten gem. Hedgehog in the Fog tells a rather simple story—a hedgehog is on his way to his friend's place when, due to his curiosity, he gets lost in a dense fog and encounters all sorts of strange, terrifying creatures. It may seem like a small tale, but it's one that's rich in symbolisms and filled with deeper meanings. A haunting, profound metaphor for routines and inquisitiveness, for friendship and for childhood, for the childlike wonder and for the fear of the unknown—for life. Yuri Norstein's animation is quite unique…

Welcome to Sovietember, a month long 'challenge' by my good friend Para. If you don't follow Para, do so. They are, pretty much, the best person on Letterboxd.
In this wonderful animation we shift fluidly between the real and the surreal. Normality and familiarity is instantly evoked through a story of woodland animals in their habitat, only for the craft to obscure this feeling. The animation is dextrous as shapes change and morph in uncanny ways. The harsh musical cues are immaculately placed and uniquely unsettling, with the visual framing and often sharp oscillation between images cementing the overall strangeness.
Yet, there is such an emotional acuity here. This is a work that traverses so many emotions in order to…
